Abstract
1,139,449. Abrading. NORTON CO. 8 Dec., 1966 [8 Dec., 1965], No. 55064/66. Heading B3D. An abrasive belt handling device comprises a pair of belt contact members 13, 13<SP>1</SP> pivotally mounted on a frame member 24 and disposed in adjustably spaced relationship, means 26 mounted on the frame to adjust the spaced relationship, means 25 mounted on the frame to pivot the members to any desired angle to the frame, and means 27 to lock the members at the desired angle. Each member 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, which may consist of a hollow shell or a plurality of spaced rods, has a semicircular crosssection for fitting over the contact and idler rollers of an abrasive belt machine for transferring a belt 11 between the machine and support 12 of a rack for the belt. The member 13 is pivoted at 15 to a support 14 and can be adjusted about the pivot by links 17, 18 connected by a link 20 to a piston 21 connected to a feed screw 22 having a hand wheel 26. The screw is disposed in a hollow shaft 23 secured to the support 14 and disposed in the frame 24, rotation of the shaft by a hand wheel 25 pivoting the support 14 relative to the frame 24. The member 13<SP>1</SP> is carried on the support 14 by a pair of vertically adjustable bearings 32. The frame 24 is supported by a bearing 29 from rollers 30 engaging a rail 31. Alternatively, the frame may be carried by a wheeled support. In use, the members 13, 13<SP>1</SP> are aligned with the supports 12 and hand wheel 26 is operated to pivot member 13 downwardly so as to permit the abrasive belt 11 to be slid on to the members 13, 13<SP>1</SP>, the hand wheel then being actuated so that the member 13 moves back to its horizontal position to tighten the belt. The frame 24 is then moved along the track to a position adjacent the machine and the support 14 pivoted relative to the frame by the hand wheel 25 to align the members 13, 13<SP>1</SP> with the rollers of the abrasive belt machine, a detent 27 locking the supports 14 in position. The ends 16, 19 of the members 13, 13<SP>1</SP> are arranged to overlap the rollers so that the belt can be transferred on to the rollers.
