986,783. Grinding. W. SCHMIDT. Aug. 7, 1963, No. 31089/63. Heading B3D. Apparatus for grinding and polishing the edges of glass panes, mirrors or the like, comprises an endless conveyer belt 1 which passes over horizontal rollers and on which the workpieces are placed flat, and, at each side of the conveyer belt, at least one grinding-wheel 33 on a vertical axle 31 held on a pivoted arm 30 which is pivoted about further vertical axle 29. Each arm 30 is double-ended and rotatably supports a grinding wheel 33 and a grinding or polishing wheel 34 at its ends, the intermediate part of the arm being mounted on a vertical axle 39 on the end of a second arm 28 which is pivotal about a vertical axle 27 mounted for adjustment transversely to the conveyer on a shaft 26. The wheels 34 can be vertically adjusted by nuts 45, 46, and the arm 28 is vertically adjustable by nuts 47, 48 whereby wear of the wheels can be compensated. A motor 43 is mounted on each arm and drives the wheels by means of belts 42, 37, 38. The wheels are urged into engagement with the edges of the glass by springs and/or weights 49 acting to urge the arms 28 about their axles 27. Before the edges are ground, the upper surfaces of the glass panes may be grooved by grinding-wheels 16 which are rotatably mounted on pivoted arms 17 and driven by belts 23 from a shaft 24 connected by a pulley drive 25 to an electric motor. The wheels 16 can be adjusted transversely of the conveyer along a rail 19, screws 18 securing the wheels in their adjusted positions. Chaindriven rollers 14 are mounted above the conveyer and press the glass panes against the conveyer under the action of their weight and springs. A polishing agent, such as pumice powder and water, is supplied by drip feed pipes from a container having an agitating mechanism driven from .the shaft 44 of the wheel 34. After grinding, the glass panes are carried by the conveyer between washing rollers 56 and spray pipes 58 and hot air supply and discharge devices arranged above and below the path of the glass.
