An apparatus for coating paper webs, e.g. by means of a roller rotating in a coating trough, has a doctor roller formed with helical grooves which contact the coated surface of the paper. The doctor roller may be positively driven in or against the direction of movement of the paper and at a speed greater or less than that of the paper. Both sides of the paper may be coated in turn.
