Abstract

720,327. Ball bearings. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. June 4, 1952 [Dec. 6, 1951], No. 14115/52. Class 12 (1). A thrust bearing assembly for a shaft 10, operating at a constant predetermined axial thrust T and constant speed, comprises a main bearing 18 and a locating bearing 19. The bearings comprise balls 23, 24 engaging races 21, 22 on a fixed member 20 and races 16, 17 on members 14, 15 respectively secured to the shaft 10. The angles #, #<SP>1</SP> which radial lines through the points of contact make with the bearing axis are such that the axial thrust component due to the centrifugal force of the balls 23 in the main bearing balances the combined applied axial thrust T and the thrust due to the centrifugal force of the balls 24 in the locating bearing. Preferably the balls 23 in the main bearing are heavier than the balls 24 in the locating bearing, and #<SP>1</SP> is greater than #.
