Abstract

997,539. Paper making. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Nov. 10, 1961 [Nov. 15, 1960 (3)], No. 40351/61. Heading D2A. Apparatus for improving the distribution of fibrous material in a liquid vehicle, particularly in the flow channel from a paper making headbox comprises a flow channel 205 (see Fig. 11) having a generally convergent configuration and an alternating series of maximum and minimum crosssectional areas D, d to produce a fluctuating shear field in the liquid vehicle, the outlet of the channel being defined by upper and lower, substantially parallel, flat walls. The fluctuating areas may be formed by smoothly contoured walls, Fig. 11 or by projections on the walls of the channel, Fig. 6: as shown in Fig. 6 the channel may converge in a stepwise fashion. Details are given of preferred shapes for the projections and of the sizes and disposition of the channel walls. In Fig. 9, not shown, parts of the inner surface of the final parallel walled section of the channel are of resilient material e.g. rubber and are mounted on a number of supports of similar material.
