A ring-spinning spindle has a thread-entrainment device comprising a crown 4 on a shank 5, on which the crown causes the thread to wrap in helical turns, and a shoulder 6a on the spindle or between the spindle and the shank which keeps the turns of yarn on the shank and off the spindle, the diameter of the shank adjacent the shoulder being not more than 1/3rd (e.g.1/3 rd-1/ 10 th) of the outside diameter of the shoulder. The latter may be formed integrally with the spindle or as a cap to be inserted between the cop and the spindle, with an elastic ring between the inside of the cop and the top of the spindle, Fig. 3, not shown. In both forms, the shoulder lies above the upper edge of the cop. The crown and shoulder each may be frusto-conical with a 45 degree angle, and the shank may be tapered; the crown may be grooved and detachable and its diameter may be from 2-5 times greater than that of the adjacent part of the shank.
