994,849. Heels, protectors. J. S. COWEN. June 7, 1963 [June 12, 1962], No. 22436/62. Heading A3B. A heel having a detachable tread part comprises an upper portion 1 attached to the shoe bottom and a tread portion 2 which is attached to the upper portion 1 by a screw 11 which is screwed into threaded sleeves 6, 8 either from below as shown in Fig. 3 or from above, through a hole in the shoe bottom as shown in Fig. 4. The upper portion 1 and tread portion 2 are both oval in shape and are position by two projections 12 on the upper portions which engage recesses 14 in the tread portion. The tread portion 2 can be fitted in two positions so that when the rear edge is worn the tread portion can be reversed. The portions 1, 2 may be made from rubber or leather and the threaded sleeves may be metal, e.g. brass or aluminium alloy, or a hard plastics material.
