953,129. Boot &c. protectors. FRED HAWKES (N. V. ENGINEERS) Ltd., J. RICHARDS (MALLEABLE) Ltd., and ASHMAN BROS. Ltd. June 8, 1962 [June 28, 1961], No. 23350/61. Heading A3B. [Also in Division B5] A boot protector for use with moulded soles has a base strip with at least one keying device comprising a lug and a keying aperture which extends through the base strip and into the lug. For use as a toe-protector (Fig. 2) the base strip 1 has a flange 2 with the lugs 4, which are tapered, forming buttresses against the flange. The apertures 3 in the base strip have bevelled edges and extend into the lugs at 5. The lug 4 may be recessed at its outer edge to form a prong (not shown). When used as a heel protector (Fig. 4) the base strip has no flange and the apertures 12 may be rectangular. The protector is attached to the sole during moulding (Fig. 7), the material of the sole flowing into the apertures to form a key to retain the protectors in position. The protectors may be positioned during moulding by means of pins 19 in the mould engaging with additional apertures 8 in the base strip. The protector may be made of metal or of synthetic resin and may have a serrated surface or a coating of a bonding agent to assist keying. The protector may be used in various locations on the shoe bottom as in Fig. 8 (not shown).
