In apparatus for lubricating wheel flanges in locomotives or other vehicles running on wheels by means of pneumatically-operated spray heads 7, 8, 9, 10 (Fig. 1), supplied with lubricant through quantity-regulating devices 33 (Fig. 4) by a periodically-operated pump 6 (Fig. 1), the heads 7, 8, 9, 10 and the pump 6, joined by a main pipe 21, are operated by a compressed-air system through a pipe 11) controlled by a valve 13, e.g. an electromagnet valve, operated by an impulse-emitting device 14 in dependence on specific distances of travel. A three-way air supply valve 17 in the main air pipe 11 is acted on by an air-storage device 15, charged periodically from the pipe 11 by the valve 13 attached thereto, and has passages for the pipe 11, a control pipe 16 (with an air throttle 24) from the valve 13 and a venting pipe 25. In a main compressed-air pipe 18 from the valve 17 to the heads 7, 8, 9 and 10 is a non-return valve 26. The valves 13 and 17, the device 15, the air throttle 24 and their connecting pipes, form a self-contained unit on the air pipe 11. Each spray head, connected at 34 to the pipe 18, comprises a shut-off valve (Fig. 4) the spray nozzle 32 of which is closed when the pressure is reduced a certain amount, a valve member 36 carrying a pin 37 extending through the nozzle aperture on closure. On the valve 17 there is a control knob 30 for additional manual operation.
