503,470. Steering device for automobile torpedoes; fluid-pressure servomotor systems. SILURIFICIO WHITEHEAD DI FIUME SOC. ANON. Oct. 5,1938, No. 28895. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1937. [Class 135] Relates to a control device for connection between the gyroscope and rudder or rudders of a torpedo which, at predetermined points in the travel of the torpedo, changes the duration or amplitude of the deviations which the torpedo can carry out on either side of its normal path. The invention is shown applied to steering apparatus of the kind described in Specification 234,419, [Class 9 (ii)], two distributing valves 13, 14 being employed, the former for normal running and the latter, with somewhat longer collars 14<1>, 1411 for providing wider deviations, being brought into use at a predetermined point by interrupting the flow of fluid from valve 13 by means of spring- loaded piston valve member 22 arranged in cylinder 19 and normally held in the open position by disc 26 rotatably mounted on its shaft. Disc 28, connected to the torpedo engine through shaft 29, serves to drive disc 26, which latter may be adjusted, with the aid of pointer 31, so that at the desired point in the course of travel the rod of piston 22 may drop into hole 32, thus closing pipes 15 and' 17 and at the same time forcing disc 28 out of engagement with disc 26. Shaft 29 may be uncoupled from disc 28 if desired, thus allowing piston 22 to remain permanently in the open position. More than two distributing valves may be provided with different lengths of collar, to be brought into action successively and different control means, for example a time device, may be employed.
