TRAIN-CONTROL SYSTEM.
Application filed April 8, 1925.
To all whom t may concern: Y
`Be it known that l, Grenen iV. Denen, a .citizen 'oi the United States, residing` at Knoxville, in the county ol' Knox and State et Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in rfram-Control Systems, ot which the following is a specific-ation.
The invention relates to train control systems, particularly ot the type known as the union switch and signal system, and has :tor its object to provide in combination with a system ot' this character indicating means, preferably audible, for notifying the engineer, after he has entered restricted territory1 that he has brought the train within the speed limit imposed on him while in said restricted territory, and to warn him when the speed ot his train approaches the speed .limit under which he is' running.
A further object is to provide means whereby it' the speed of the train reaches the speed limit or approaches too closely the speed limit, the brakes will be automatically set and the train stopped or reduced in speed.
A further obj ect is Ato provide in combination with the magnet valve, spaced ports carried bya slide valve controlled bythe magnet, and a speed controlled slide valve having spaced ports, pipe connections in communication with the timing valve and blow downV reservoir, and the main air feed pipe line, whereby, when the speed controlled valve is in a predetermined position, under the speed controlling mechanism a signal will be given to the engineer that he is traveling at the predetermined speed and must not increase his speed, as an increase of speed will allow exhaust of air from the pipe, leading to the relay and protection valves and cause the automatic setting of the brakes.
Aw further object is to provide the speed controlled valve with spaced ports, said ports being positioned whereby when the *alve is in operative position, substantially at a predetermined speed, one of said ports will register with spaced ports in communication with a signalling device and the feed line, and the other port in communication with a port leading to the atmosphere, and in a position where upon a further moveinentof the valve a port leading to the re- Serial No. 21,600.
lay and protective valves will be uncovered. Also to provide the magnet control valve with spaced ports which, when the train is in a restricted area or territory and the magnet in deenergized position, will register lwith spaced ports in the timing valve and blow down reservoir pipe line, and allows a continuous exhaust from the blow down reservoir while the train is in restricted territory. The magnet valve has its other port, when the valve is deenergized, in registration with spaced ports in the feed line when the train is in restricted territory. thereby allowing flow of air through the port in the speed control valve to the signalling or indicating means within the engine cab, for operating the signallingmeans, when the train is traveling at substantially the predetermined speed.
lith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ot parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise. enil'iodiment ot' the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit oi the invention.
Reterring to the drawingwherein the single tigure shows a diagramn'latic view ot the device, parts being shown in section to better illustrate the same, the numeral l designates an engine axle, or any other rotatable part ot an engine, and which axle is provided with a bevelled gear 2, which meshes with a bevelled gear 3 carried by a vertically disposed flexible shaft 4, which operates the centrifugal governor 6 through the gears 'T and S., which connect the governor to the flexible shaft l. The centrifugal governor, during its rotation. causes the arms 9 thereof to pivot outwardly incident to the centrifugal torce, and the weights l() carried thereby, and causes the rollers l1, carried by the inner ends Ot' the arms, to move forwardly in engzagement with the disc l2 ot the slidable bar 13, which slidably mounted in the bearing le against the action oi the coiled spring l5, .vhich norn'ially forces the disc l2 rearwardly, ther-etere it will be seen that as the speed ot the axle l increases or diminishes the amount of movement ot the bar 18 will inblow down valve 2l will operate when the magnet valve 28 is in deenergized position Y terially n'iodifyinp; the construction thereoit,
' ot said systems.
and Without varying the normal. operations lit will also be seen that the control and indicating or signalling means will indicate to the engineer when he has attained the prescribed speed within the restricted area, and will also indicate to him that an increase oi speed will automatically set the loi-altes, however the engineer will have a free range ot control below the prescribed restricted speed. providing the adjusting bolts i8, it will. be seen that the valve 2l may be adjusted minutely and accurately, and at the saine time the port 41 may be placed at various distances in relation to the port elf-i in which the pipe 45 is connected tor allowingv a slight range oi' movement before an automatic operation.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful ist* l. The combination with a train control system having a magnet valve and a speed governor, of valve means operated by said speed governor and cooperating' with ports Vin communication with ports in the magnet va ve and lioiming means whereby when a Vpredetermined speed is substantially obtained a signal will be given and upon exceeding the predetermined speed brakes will. be set. Y
2. The combination with a train control system oi' the character set forth and having a magnet control valve, speed control mechanism, a reservoir pipe line leading to a blow down valve, a feed pipe line. said magnet valve being provided with ports registering with ports in the reservoir pipe line and the ij'eed pipe line when the magnet is deenergized, a speed control valve, a port carried by said speed control valve and registering with spaced ports in the feed pipeline at a predetermined speed, said feed pipe line terminating' in a signaling` device, a second port carried by the speed valve, a relay and protection valve pipe line leading to the atmosphere, said second port carried by the speed valve registering with a port in the relay and protection valve pipe line and overlapping a second port in said relay and protection valve pipe line, whereby upon an increase of speed both ot' said last named ports will register with the second mentioned port in the speed valve.
fl. rEhe combination with a train control brake system of the character described and comprising a magnet control valve having spaced ports, a speed governing device, of means for limiting the speed ot a train and indicating' the attainment ot substantially a predetermined speed, said means compris inn' a speed control valve having;` spaced ports, a blow down reservoir pipe line having ports ol: communication with one ot the spaced ports of the magnet valve` a iteed pipe line having` ports ot communication with the other port of the magnet valve and ports of communication with one of the ports of the speed control valve, a relay and protection valve pi io line leading to the atmosphere and having ports, one of which registers with one o'f the ports of the speed control. valve at substantially a predetermined speed and the other port positioned whereby upon an increase oi speed both oig said ports will register with the speed control valve port.
Ll. The combination with a train control system oi the character described and comprising a speed governor and "a magnet valve, ot a speed control valve controlled by the ojovernor, said magnet valve and speed control valve cooperating whereliy upon the attainn'ient o'i' a predetermined speed a signal will be continuously `given and upon en cceding the predetermined speed the train will be stopped.
The combination with a train control system ot the character described comprising a speed governor and a magnet valve and into ports ot which valves a feed line discharges through spaced ports, a blow down reservoir pipe line discharging into a porto't the magnet valve through spaced ports and leading' to the blow down valve, said speed control valve having' its poi'ts positioned whereby upon the attainment of a predetermined speed the .teed valve line will operate a signal through one port and upon increased speed above the predetermined speed air will be exhausted from a relay and protection valve line.
