Abstract

991,501. Two part couplings. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. July 9, 1963 [July 20, 1962], No. 27126/63. Heading H2E. A female connector which is formed from a metal blank comprises a pair of hollow, frustoconical members joined by a portion of the blank and one or more resilient tines at one end of the members which allow insertion of the female connector into but prevent its withdrawal from an insulated block. As shown in Fig. 2 each pair of frusto-conical members 16 is formed by folding the blank and secured by tabs 24 fitting into co-operating slits 26 so that a longitudinal slot extends the length of each member. Each pair of members is then inserted into cavities 18 in the accommodating block 10 so that tines 32 and 34 extending from each member 16 engage with ledges 10a and 10b and lock it in position. Tines 34 from adjacent pairs of members are bent to form contacts 30 which cooperate with contact lands on a printed circuit board which may be engaged in groove 50 between the contacts 30. If a plug, which is too large for the female member 16, is inserted, the slot 22 allows the female connector to expand into the cavity 18 and in the event of breakage a broken connector may be removed by dislodging its tines with a special tool inserted from the rear of the block.
