The heat of roasting gases containing lead and sulphur is utilized by maintaining the temperature of the heat transfer surfaces above 260‹ C., so that plastic deposits are not formed. This may be achieved by maintaining high steam pressures in a boiler or superheater heated by the waste gases, by regulating the gas velocities in an air heater, the air from which may heat a boiler, or by the provision of lining tubes within the fire tubes of a waste heat boiler, which is heated by radiation from the lining tubes.
