Abstract
987,722. Drying webs. ILFORD Ltd. March 18, 1964 [March 20, 1963], No. 11089/63. Heading F4G. An air squeegee for removing surface moisture from a web 14 comprises two sections 7, 8 held together by end plates (riot shown) and guide pins 4, which sections house in recesses fixed and floating cylinders 1, 2 respectively. The gap between the cylinders through which the web passes is maintained at a minimum distance by each cylinder 2 resting on the flanged ends of the co-operating Cylinder 1 and the floating cylinders 2 are normally held there by air from an inlet pipe 6 fed to the recesses 10 housing the cylinders 2. Some air from the recesses 10 also passes to the main air chamber 13 of the squeegee for passage through a gap on either side of the film to the back of the film which air is then forced out of the apparatus to prevent the film touching either of the two pairs of cylinders. Any increase in the gap between co-operating cylinders due to thickening of the film, e.g. by splicing, forces the cylinders 2 back into the recesses 10 and so restricts the air passage into the chamber 13. As a result, all the air from the pipe 6 is used to force back the cylinders 2 on to the cylinders 1 and so re-opens the passages to the chamber 13.
