Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A static pneumatic pressure is produced between a plate 32, Fig. 7, and the web 30 by air at a high pressure in a plenum chamber 22 directed through elongate nozzles 26 which extend traversely of the web and beyond the side margins thereof. Static pressure zones may be produced on both sides of the web to give guiding and transverse smoothing properties (Fig. 6), or may be produced on one side of the web to hold the web in contact with a roller (54, Fig. 2). The plate 32 may be replaced by an elongate bar (320, Fig. 8), (321, Fig. 9), (323, Fig. 11). In (Fig. 12) plenum chambers 22 and plates 32 are used in combination with drying nozzles (66) which conduct drying air in opposite directions against opposite faces of the web 30.
