Abstract

Apparatus for compressively shrinking a textile web 19 comprises a travelling drive Surface 15, a first forwardly extending stationary surface 27 generally parallel to the surface 15 and being arranged to press theweb 19 against the surface 15, a second forwardly extending stationary surface 35 also parallel to the surface 15 and spaced a predetermined amount further from the surface 15 than the surface 27, and a retarding passage following the enlargement defined between the surfaces 15 and 35 and adapted to retard the web 19 passing therethrough. As shown, the drive member 14 is a rotating helically-knurled roll having a large diameter relative to the thickness of the web 19. The surface 27 is defined by a sheet member 25 of blue steel shim stock and the surface 35 is defined by a sheet member 33 having a forward extension 33a extending over a stationary retarding member 16. The spacing Z of the surface 35 from the surface 15 can be maintained by a control member 39 acting on the member 33. An inclined plate 138 acts on the member 39 to apply the force at an edge E to press the web 19 into contact with the surface 15. In a modification (not shown), the retarding passage is formed on one or both sides by moving surfaces, e.g. the extension 33a is replaced by a retarding roll and the opposite side of the retarding passage is formed by the surface 17 of the retarding member or by the surface of the roll 14.
