Abstract

986,244. Desks. CARSON BROS. (PRODUCTION) Ltd. March 10, 1964 [Jan. 14, 1963], No. 1658/63. Heading A4H. A desk, e.g. for a typist, comprises a foldable top 4, 5 which can provide an unfolded flat top for the desk or a folded condition to serve as a book-rest, and a platform 15 which is extensible from beneath the unfolded top to an operative position providing a horizontal support, e.g. for a typewriter, to be used in cooperation with the folded top. The hinged together top portions 4, 5 are hinged by one portion 5 to the desk side walls 1 at the front 3 to form an inverted V-shaped book rest with the face end of the other portion 4 engaged in a retaining notch 6. The desk top portion 4 carries a T-section book support ledge 7 which is movable from a retracted position with the head of the ledge engaged in a groove in the top 4 to an extended position in which it is releasably backed by a spring catch 13. A rib 14 beneath the top 5 serves to engage the ledge 7 to extend it. The platform 15 is supported at one end by pivoted links 17 and at the other end on an inclined guide 20 along which it is slidable to its operative horizontal position in which it rests on the bevelled and notched top of the guide 20 and is releasably locked by a catch 22 after engaging stops 23. Handles 21 are provided on the platform 15.
