Abstract

Hydroxypropyl or hydroxy butyl esters are prepared by reacting a mono- or polycarboxylic acid or an acid ester of the latter, free from aliphatic unsaturation with propylene or butylene oxide in an aqueous reaction medium comprising water and one or more of the following (i) amides of saturated aliphatic carboxylic (1-4C) acids, (ii) \sHN-substituted amides of saturated aliphatic carboxylic (1-4 C) atoms, (iii) neutral alkali metal salts, (iv) neutral salts of an alkaline earth metal which yield water-soluble salts with the mono- or polycarboxylic acid or ester thereof, (v) neutral ammonium salts. Preferred media are aqueous formamide, dimethyl formamide or acetamide, aqueous chlorides, nitrates and sulphates of sodium or potassium or mixtures thereof. Acids reacted may be saturated aliphatic carboxylic (1-20 C) benzene mono- or polycarboxylic acid and their nuclear substituted derivatives and naphthalene carboxylic acids. Examples describe the use of butyric, caproic, lauric, caprylic, benzoic, t-butyl benzoic, p-chlorobenzoic, phenylacetic, o- and m-toluic, comm. terephthalic, and isophthalic acids and methyl terephthalate to form the corresponding hydroxy esters.
