Abstract

PURPOSE: The ester-interchange reaction between methyl methacrylate and butanol is conducted using sodium hydroxide and/or potassium hydroxide as an ester- enchange catalyst in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor to produce the titled compound of high purity inexpensively in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The ester-interchange reaction between methyl methacrylate and butanol is conducted using sodium hydroxide and/or potassium hydroxide as an ester-enchange catalyst in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor to produce the titled compound. The reaction is effected usually under normal pressure, however, the reaction under reduced pressure of 200W760Torr is preferred, because the polymerization is inhibited. Further, as shown in reaction equation, this reaction is completed by breaking the equilibrium and so batchwise reaction is preferred. Since the catalyst does not corrode the facility, a SUS stainless steel can be used. Further, the catalyst cost is low, because the acitivity is high and side reaction is little. Said catalyst does not form the compound of formula I.
