In a mineral-mining machine there is positioned beneath a wedging and loading structure 21 at the leading end of the machine a cutter chain-carrying, horizontal jib 30 that extends both ahead of and laterally of the structure 21 to pre-cut a mineral face at floor level as the structure 21 wedges away mineral from the face on entering the kerf formed by a rotary cutter 50 vertically upstanding from the leading end of the jib.
