To permit of longwall mining of a mineral seam without the necessity of separately forming stable holes at. the ends of the longwall face of the seam there is provided a mining machine having at either end of the motorcontaining body of the machine a cutter disc which is positioned laterally of the face side of the body towards the face and has picks projecting from its periphery and from the side nearest the face. Such cutter means can be sumped into the face before making a cutting traverse of the face.
