To enable sumping into a face of a cutter drum rotatable about a horizontal axis there is provided on the face end of the drum sumping cutters, the tips of which lie to the drum side of a vertical plane swept out by the tips of clearance cutters mounted at the face end of the pick armed curved periphery of the drum, said periphery being profiled to cause displacement of out mineral axially of the drum away from the face end thereof. Two preferred embodiments are described.
