Abstract
857,251. Controlling mining machinery by radiation. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Jan. 21, 1959 [Jan. 22, 1958], No. 2167/58. Class 40(3). [Also in Group XXI] A mineral-cutting or drilling machine is, maintained in a given strata by directing electromagnetic radiations 10 into the strata through which the machine is cutting from one or more sources 4 mounted in the cutting head of the machine and steering the head by suitable known means to maintain at a constant level the amount of back-scatter of the radiation by the mineral as recorded by suitable instruments 6 also mounted in the head. Radiation sources 4 are spaced from geiger counters 6, which are shielded from all but reflected radiations 10 by steel plates 7, 8.
