Abstract

984,373. Tube-type heat exchangers. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. April 19, 1963 [June 21, 1962], No. 23982/62. Heading F4S. The header 5 of a tubular heat exchanger is formed with a double wall 4a, 4b the wall 4a being fixed at one end to the heat exchanger casing 1 and the wall 4b being fixed at one end to the tube plate 3, and both walls being joined together, e.g. by means of flanges 9, 10, at their ends remote from the tube plate, and at least one of the walls 4a (as shown) and/or 4b having flexibility in the direction of the length of the tubes 2, thus permitting relative expansion between the tubes and the casing. Steam passing through the casing is condensed by cooling water passing through the headers and tubes 2. The tube plate shown is double-walled to permit introduction of condensate through a pipe 11 at a pressure higher than that of the cooling water to prevent leakage of impure water into the condensing steam. In the form shown, the plate 4b is rigid and packing members 12 are disposed around its inner edge to support the tube plate within the casing.
