Abstract

890,869. Converter chimneys. VORKAUF, H. June 30, 1960 [March 21, 1960], No. 22879/60. Class 25 [Also in Group XIII] A converter chimney comprises walls lined with straight vertical and/or inclined heat exchange tubes and which is supported and suspended from additional tubes through which a cooling medium such as water and/or steam and water mixture is circulated. A cooled converter chimney is lined with straight vertical and inclined heat exchange tubes 1 which carry the whole of the casing and surrounding insulating material of the chimney, the tubes emanating from a distributer header 3 and terminate in a collector header 4 and the chimney is supported on bearings 7 which in turn are supported on additional tubes 8 circulated by a pipe 9 with water from the water space of a water and steam drum 2 having a condenser 18 attached thereto. The tubes 8 are linked together by tubes 10 and are also linked by a tube 11 to the suction side of a circulating pump 12 and the water is passed through a pressure line 13 to a plurality of pipes 13<SP>1</SP> which are held in bearings 7<SP>1</SP> and are connected to and support the lower header 3. The bearings 7 also hold steam and water delivery lines 6 running from the header 4 to the drum 2 or to an intermediate collector header 5. Expansion of the chimney due to the heat in the gases from the converter 14 is in a downward direction so as to decrease the distance between the converter mouth and chimney entrance. In a modification the construction is described with reference to a straight converter chimney.
