Abstract
983,860. Engine construction. H. LIST. July 24, 1961 [Sept. 27, 1960], No. 26679/61. Heading FIB. In an I.C. engine, comprising a base and having a divided crank-shaft, cylinder blocks are mounted on the base in one or more lines and are bolted together, and an intermediate element is provided between the cylinder blocks. An in-line engine having three cylinder blocks 1, 2, 3 has a separate element 7 placed between the blocks 2 and 3 to provide sufficient clearance for the flanges 5, 6 joining the two parts of the divided crank-shaft 4. The crankshaft joint is placed in a section of the engine remote from the driving end of the crank-shaft to reduce the amount of torque transmitted through the joint and thereby allow minimum thickness of the element 7. The base 14 and/or the oil sump 15 may be split up into the same number of elements as there are cylinder blocks, which elements may be bolted together with a separate element in the area of the crankshaft joint. In a modification, the base 14 and oil sump 15 are replaced by a single member, the flanged joint between this member and the cylinder blocks being located in a horizontal plane containing the crank-shaft axis.
