Abstract

897,648. Engine construction and cooling; valve gear. SALZMANN, W. E. July 9, 1958 [July 9, 1957; Sept. 5, 1957], No. 21961/58. Classes 7(2), 7(4) and 7(6). Four cylinders I .. IV, Figs. 1 and 2, spaced successively along the crank-shaft, have axes which viewed axially form an X the horizontally opposite enclosed angles # of which are each less than 90 degrees. As shown, the cylinders I, II and III, IV respectively act on common crank-pins 180 degrees apart, but, to give equal ignition intervals, the cylinders II, IV may interchange position and there may be (a) common crank-pins 30, 3T, Fig. 4, set at the angle v, or (b) four pins, the first and second and third and fourth of which form pairs at 180 degrees and the second and third of which are at the angle v. Crank-shaft balance is assisted by a counterweight 2 on a pulley 3 and a cut-out 4 in a flywheel 5. A cam shaft 6 operates overhead valves via push-rods and rockers. There is a finned oil sump with claws 20 engaging mounting girders 21 projecting from a change-speed gear-box. A metal or synthetic plastic fan 22 supplies cooling air. A dynamo 25, starter 26, ignition distributer 27 and oil filter 23 are provided. Angles # of 30 degrees and, in the case of very closely axially spaced cylinders, 45 degrees are mentioned. The cylinders may be water-cooled. In a modification, Fig. 10, using combined air and liquid cooling, the angle # is 10 degrees and the cylinders form pairs 39 enclosed in finned jackets containing water, water with anti-freeze, ethylene glycol, or oil, and having filling ducts 45 closed off by a plug 46, circulation being by thermosyphoning or by pumps which may be controlled by thermostats. The crank arrangement is as in (b) above, except that the second and third pins are aligned. A dynamo 49 and starter 50 are provided. The ducts 45 are combined with induction pipes 47 having a carburetter flange 48. Reference is made to the use for the upper cylinders of cam tappets having extension heads.
