Abstract
966,602. I.C. engine construction. SOC. D'ETUDES DE MACHINES THERMIQUES. Feb. 2, 1961 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 4014/61. Heading FIB. Each cylinder 1 of a horizontally-opposed or Vee engine has holding-down tie-rods 15, 16, which are substantially in the transverse medial plane of a crankshaft bearing 8, and like tie-rods 17, 18 which are in close proximity to such a plane. The tie-rods may also secure the cylinder heads. The cylinders are shown supported on the upper wall 7 of a welded crankcase and located by a compression pre-stressed welded box structure 11, 12, 13 itself held down by prestressed tie-rods 20, 21. Each cylinder may be held down by more than four tie-rods.
