Abstract
811,291. Engine construction. SMITH, A. G. [trading as SOUTHERN PRODUCTS], and SIDNEY, A. A. June 10, 1955 [March 12, 1954], No. 7341/54. Class 7(2) The two halves 1, 2 of each crankshaft bearing are secured together about the crankshaft by two tie-rods 5 and nuts 4, an oil retaining packing 8 being located in the crankcase 6 where each tie-rod 5 passes therethrough whilst the cylinder block and head retaining studs 9 are threaded in a concentric or off-set manner into the tops of the tie-rods 5. Where the crankcase 6 and cylinder block are formed in an integral casting the tie-rods pass through apertures in the casting and are threaded at the upper ends to provide cylinder head studs. The tie-rods may alternately be tapped at their lower ends to receive separate threaded members which secure the bearing halves together.
