A yarn cleaner comprises a cutting member actuated by an electromagnetic circuit and connected to a permanent magnet movably arranged in the circuit. In the mechanism shown, an irregularity in a yarn 8 passing between the plates of a measuring capacitor 10, embedded in insulating material 9, causes a coil, Fig. 2 (not shown) to be energized so that polepieces 1 and 2 are magnetized and a permanent magnet 7 in the air gap therebetween is repelled from its normal position against polepiece 2. The movement of magnet 7 tilts a knife 5 about an end accommodated in a recess 6 so that its cutting edge severs the yarn. A soft-iron plate 11 reduces the reluctance of the air gap.
