Abstract

964,409. Electromagnetic relays. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Aug. 2, 1962 [Aug. 3, 1961], No. 29678/62. Heading H2B. A change-over contact device in which the movable contact reed 14 and " front " fixed contact 13 are ferromagnetic has a permanent magnet 17 attached to the " back " contact 12 with the magnetic axis of the magnet at right angles to the plane of the contact members 12, 13, 14. The permanent magnet may be magnetized after the members 12, 13 have been sealed at a preset spacing in the end of the glass tube on which the coil 15 is mounted. The permanent magnet flux has no significant component which can have any additive or subtractive effect on the coil flux so that the device is equally responsive to current in either direction in the coil 15. The permanent magnet flux H2 (Fig. 2b) is normal to the electric field E on contact separation and a magnetic blow-out effect is produced.
