873,813. Magnetic switches. BAUMGARTNER, F., [trading as BAUMGARTNER FABRIK ELEKTR. APPARATE, FRANZ]. April 29, 1959 [April 30, 1958], No. 14667/59. Class 38 (5). In a switch for operation by a magnetic shield passing between a magnet and a magnetic contact device the latter has a resilient magnetizable moving contact arm in a sealed envelope. In Fig. 4, a housing 9 is provided with a slot 17 between a permanent magnet 28 and a sealed glass tube 20 containing a fixed contact 25 and movable contact 23 on a resilient arm 24 carrying an iron stud 26. When an iron shield (not shown) is inserted in the slot 17 the stud 26 is no longer attracted to a polepiece 27 sealed in the wall of the tube 20 so that the contacts 23, 25 engage. In Fig. 6, an auxiliary permanent magnet 29 in the form of an annular ring surrounding the polepiece 27 is axially polarized in the opposite direction to the main magnet 28 and assists the magnet 28 in attracting the stud 26 and arm 24 so that a smaller main magnet 28 is required and the spring arm 24 may be stiffer to resist vibration. Polepieces 30 help to concentrate the flux in the contact area. Normally open or normally closed contacts may be provided. A coil may when energized overcome the bias of the auxiliary magnet 29 and prevent relay operation or alternatively the magnet 29 may be an electromagnet so that the relay will not operate when the electromagnet is de-energized. The magnet 28 may also be an electromagnet and both electromagnets may be energized by A.C.
