Abstract

1,174,309. Magnetic switches; electric selectors. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 March, 1967 [26 March, 1966], No. 13664/67. Headings H1L and H1N. A permanent magnet movable to operate at least one set of magnetic contacts, is reciprocable between the poles of an energizable magnetic circuit with the permanent magnet poles, at its extremities, facing poles the magnetic circuit. As shown in Fig. 1 the disc-shaped permanent magnet 1 surrounds a non-magnetic shaft 3 and is attracted to one of the poles 5, 7 on the ends of magnetic sleeves 9, 11. When coils 13, 15 surrounding the sleeves 9, 11 are energized to provide similar polarity at poles 5, 7 the magnet 1 is attracted to that pole 5 or 7 which is of opposite polarity to the facing magnet surface and on de-energization of the coils remains in this position until the coils are pulsed in the opposite direction. In the position shown the coils were last energized to produce S. poles at 5 and 7 and the magnet 1 holds sealed magnetic reed contacts 25, 27 closed and contacts 21, 23 are open. In Fig. 2 the permanent magnet surrounds a sealed, ball armature contact device similar to that disclosed in Specification 983,615 and is movable between non-magnetic buffers 44, 45 on pole plates 37, 39. A single operating coil 47 surrounds a pole member 33 having an aperture 42 through which the magnet passes. In alternative arrangements, not shown, the magnet may have a plurality of holes each accommodating a contact unit and several coils may be used. In Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown), such switches form a co-ordinate assembly with coils on cores between magnetic strips or on lugs of magnetic plates having movable permanent magnets and contact units between the strips or lugs. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 983,615.
