A lifter rail traversing mechanism in a ring frame wherein the lifter rail is actuated through flexible elements has each flexible element guided as an open loop over a fixed roller with its ends fixed to a reciprocable traverse rod that extends over the entire length of the machine. The flexible elements may be belts or bands fixed to supports 5 on the ring rail 4 and by clamping rings 10, 11 to the traversing rod 13. Springs 14 are arranged to aid in lifting the ring rail.
