Abstract
Cyclodecen-5-one-1 is produced by dehydrating cyclodecanol-6-one-1, or carboxylic acid esters thereof, by heating in the presence of a catalyst comprising platinum, zinc, iron, an oxide or a basic or stoichiometrically neutral salt thereof, a mixture of such salts, or calcium sulphate. The reaction may be carried out at elevated temperatures, and at atmospheric pressure, when it may occur in the gas phase, or under pressure in an autoclave. 1, 6-Oxidocyclodecene-1, cyclopentano-cycloheptanone and cyclopenteno-cycloheptanone are formed as by-products during the reaction. The 1, 6-oxidocyclodecene-1 may be hydrated to cyclodecanol-6-one-1 by acidic, alkaline or catalytic hydrolysis and recycled to the reaction mixture or it may be converted to cyclodecen-5-one-1 by substantially simultaneous oxido-ring splitting and dehydration in the presence of a catalyst such as platinum, activated charcoal, Raney nickel or calcium sulphate.
