Abstract
Succinic acid, or its alkali metal salt, is prepared by the oxidation of an alkali metal salt of a -hydroxy-glutonic acid or of 2:21-dihydroxy-adipic acid, or a mixture of alkali metal salts of these acids, by alkali metal hypochlorite in a alkaline or neutral aqueous solution in the presence of a catalyst, known to be capable of promoting the decomposition of hypochlorites accompanied by the evaluation of oxygen, and the salt of succinic acid obtained converted, if desired, into the free acid. Specific catalysts are cobaltous nitrate, nickelous sulphate or a mixture of nickelous sulphate and cupric sulphate. Excess of hypochlorite is advantageous. On completion of the reaction and removal of the catalyst the solution may be acidified with hydrochloric acid, evaporated to dryness and the succinic acid extracted with acetone. Examples are given.
