Abstract

Alloys of uranium with small amounts of one or more of Fe, Al, Cr, Si or Mo are annealed in the beta phase for 5-15 minutes at a temperature of 710-760 DEG C. and then quenched to form a fine-grained alpha-phase alloy. The alloy may be held at a temperature of 500-550 DEG C. for 5-10 minutes prior to quenching in water or oil or may be quenched in water direct from the beta-phase treatment temperature. The use of the alloys in nuclear reactor fuel elements is referred to.
