Abstract
The Zr-base alloy contg. Sn, Fe, Cr and an intermetallic phase as a fine dispersion has a microstructure in which the particles are dispersed in two dimensional order, pref. along the alpha grain boundaries and sub-grain boundary. The alloy has the compsn (approx) 1.5% Sn, 0.2% Fe, 0.1% Cr, 0.1% O, balance Zr and is free of Ni. Resistance against 'pustel' corrosion is improved by heating the body in stages to a temp. at which the alpha phase is at least partly transformed into the beta phase, maintaining the body at that temp. to effect transformation of the alpha-phase into the beta-phase, cooling the body during which the intermetallic phase is pptd. in the form of particles at the alpha grain boundaries. Used for nuclear fuel casings, conduits for receiving nuclear fuel bundles, and spacer grids.
