Abstract

978,385. Agglutinated fibrous fabrics; paper. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. March 18, 1963, No. 10589/63. Headings D1R and D2B. A print pattern bonded fibrous fabric 10 comprises a fibrous web and a water-resistant hydroxyethyl cellulose binder distributed thereon in a pattern of spaced segments 30, the hydroxyethyl cellulose having a degree of etherification corresponding to an ethylene oxide content of from 2% to 5% by weight and a degree of polymerization of from 250 to 1000 anhydroglucose units. The binder segments 30 may take any desired shape including lines, circles, annuli, ovals, ellipses, triangles, rectangles, squares, diamonds, parallelograms or combinations of such forms, either regularly or irregularly shaped. The binder lines may extend across the fabric at any desired angle to the longitudinal axis thereof; may be parallel or cross each other to form diamond or irregular polygonic figures; may be continuous or may be straight, curved, sinuous or irregularly wavy. The segments 30 cover from 7% to 50% of the total surface of the fabric. Specific geometric details of the pattern of the segments 30 are given in Specifications 833,697 and 744,839 and in U.S.A. Specifications 2,705,688 and 2,705,498. To form the fabric, the fibrous web, which may be in the form of a carded web or laid by papermaking techniques, is printed with an alkaline hydroxyethyl cellulose solution having a viscosity of from 450 to 2000 centipoises and a caustic content (sodium hydroxide content) of from 6% to 9<SP>1</SP>/ 2 %. The hydroxyethyl cellulose is coagulated, e.g. in aqueous sulphuric acid, into an alkali-soluble, water-insoluble form to function as the binder. Specified fibres are cotton, viscose rayon, silk, wool, flax, mineral fibres, cross-linked cellulosic fibres, cellulose esters such as cellulose acetate and cellulose triacetate, saponified cellulose esters, polyamides such as nylon 6 and nylon 66, polyesters, vinyl fibres, acrylic fibres and modacrylic fibres. The fibres may be textile length fibres of from # inch to 2¢ inches in length or paper making length fibres of from <SP>1</SP>/ 16 to # inch in length or a mixture of the two. Preferably the fibres have a denier between 1 and 5 but fibres having a denier of up to 15 may be used. The fabric may be formed from a single fibrous web having a weight of from 35 to 250 grains per square yard or may be formed from a laminate of webs having a combined weight of from 140 to 3000 grains per square yard. The fabric may contain from 1% to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the fibrous web, of the binder. Specification 836,397 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,676,363, 2,676,364 and 2,847,411 also are referred to.
