Abstract

468,529. Agglutinated fibrous sheets; compound sheet materials; coating webs. GOLDMAN, J. H. March 10, 1936, No. 7209. Convention date, March 15, 1935. [Class 140] [Also in Group IX] A web of carded fibres is strengthened by bonding substantially all the fibres together by impregnation with a binder applied locally into the body of the web, the area of the web occupied by the binder being only a small fraction of the total area of the web. The binder may be applied in narrow lines running transversely of the fibre direction, or both transversely and longitudinally, and spaced apart at distances not exceeding the average fibre length. A number of treated webs may be superposed, or a multiple web wherein the fibres in adjacent plies cross at an angle may be impregnated along criss-cross lines. As shown, a carded web unwound from a roll 15 is passed between a resilient, e.g. rubber-faced roll 16 and a roll 18 having raised binderapplying portions which receive the binder from a roll 19, is passed over drying drums 21, and wound up. The raised binder-applying portions may be cupped or recessed to minimize spreading of the binder. The binder, which may be applied in viscous or concentrated condition, may comprise rubber solution or latex, viscose, cellulose ester, e.g. cellulose acetate in solution, resin solutions, e.g. phenolformaldehyde or vinyl resin, gums, waxes, starch, glue, or gum arabic. Cotton fibres, freed from natural waxes, resins, and oils as by boiling with alkali, may be used, or sisal, flax, hemp, jute, or silk. The product is used for surgical dressings and bandages, filter media, or padding for pillows, mattresses, and furniture. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the impregnation with criss-cross lines of binder of webs in which the fibres are arranged promiscuously, entangled, or felted, e.g. airlaid or waterlaid webs. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
