A spun yarn is produced by taking a roving 11 which has the requisite higher twist as will give the desired twist in the yarn after drafting and feeding it into a drafting zone which includes at least one false twister 3 to partially untwist the roving and allow drafting to take place, the yarn being packaged as in the winding art (i.e. wound without change of twist). As shown in Fig. 2 twist is inserted into the roving coming from supply package 10 by rotating the supply package. The delivery rollers 6 are mounted in a frame which may be driven to rotate so that high twist, highly drafted yarn can be produced without having to overtwist the roving between the package 10 and rollers 6. In other forms the roving 11 may come from and be twisted by a double twist spindle or it may come from a stationary package on which it has been previously wound with the requisite high twist. In a further form the roving passes through three consecutive drafting zones each having a false twist device, all the roller pairs, except the last, being mounted in revolving frames (like rollers 6 in Fig. 2) to prevent overtwisting of the sliver. The roller pairs and false twist devices may be moveable to adjust the lengths of the drafting zones.
