Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises finely-divided lubricating particles, at least one cellulosic resin, and a solvent for said resin, the composition having 0.5-40 wt. per cent total solids, made up of 84-62% (by vol. of total solids) of the lubricating particles and 66.38% (by vol. of total solids) of the resin, the said particles containing at least 10 wt. per cent of molybdenum disulphide. The lubricating particles may be entirely of MoS2 or may contain up to 15 wt. per cent. of graphite and/or up to 90 wt. per cent. of WS2, TiS2, BN, lead oxide, or mixtures thereof, and the particle size is 0.2-20 microns in largest dimension, at least 40% of the particles being less than 0.7 micron. The cellulosic resin is an ester or ether, those specified being cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate propionate, cellulose triacetate, cellulose propionate, nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, and carboxymethyl hydroxy cellulose, or mixtures thereof. Solvents for the resins include ethanol, ethyl acetate, toluene, acetone, hexylene glycol, diethylene glycol ether, methylene chloride, CCl4, dioxane, nitropropane and tetrahydrofuran, others of similar nature also being specified. A common diluent may also be used, e.g. heptane or mineral spirits, others also being mentioned. A plasticizer for the resin may also be present, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, dibutylphthalate, castor oil or mineral oil.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises finely-divided lubricating particles, at least one cellulosic resin, and a solvent for said resin, the composition having from 0.5 to 40% by weight total solids, made up of 34 to 62% (by volume of the total solids) of the lubricating particles, and 66 to 38% (by volume of the total solids) of the resin, the said particles containing at least 10% by weight of molybdenum disulphide. The lubricating particles may be entirely of MoS2 or may contain up to 15% by weight of graphite and/or up to 90% by weight of WS2, TiS2, BN, lead oxide, or mixtures thereof, and the particle size is 0.2 to 20 microns in largest dimension, at least 40% of the particles being less than 0.7 micron. The cellulosic resin is a cellulose ester or ether, those specified being cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate propionate, cellulose triacetate, cellulose propionate, nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, and carboxymethyl hydroxy cellulose, or mixtures thereof. Specified solvents for the cellulose resins include ethanol, ethyl acetate, toluene, acetone, hexylene glycol, diethylene glycol ether, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, dioxan, nitropropane, and tetrahydrofuran, many others of similar nature also being specifically mentioned. A common diluent may also be used, e.g. heptane or mineral spirits, others also being mentioned. A plasticizer for the cellulosic resin may also be present, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, dibutylphthalate, castor oil or mineral oil.ALSO:The surfaces of metal, rubber, glass, wood, paper, cloth, leather, cork, polystyrene and nylon are coated with a composition comprising finely divided lubricating particles, at least one cellulosic resin, and a solvent for said resin, the composition having from 0,5-40 weight per cent total solids, made up of 34-62% (by volume of the total solids) of the lubricating particles, and 66-38% (by volume of the total solids) of the resin, the said particles containing at least 10 weight per cent of molybdenum disulphide. The lubricating particles may be entirely of MoS2 or may contain up to 15 weight per cent of graphite and/or up to 90 weight per cent of WS2, TiS2, BN, lead oxide, or mixtures thereof, and the particle size is 0,2-20 microns in largest dimension, at least 40% of the particles being less than 0,7 micron. The cellulosic resin is an ester or ether, those specified being cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate propionate, cellulose triacetate, cellulose propionate, nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, and carboxymethyl hydroxy cellulose, or mixtures thereof. Specified solvents for the resin include ethanol, ethyl acetate, toluene, acetone, hexylene glycol, diethylene glycol ether, methylene chloride, CCl4, dioxan, nitropropane, and tetrahydrofuran, many others of similar nature also being specified. A common diluent may also be used, e.g. heptane or mineral spirits, others also being mentioned. A plasticizer for the cellulosic resin may also be present, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, dibutylphthalate, castor oil or mineral oil. The compositions may be applied to the substrate by spraying, brushing or dipping, and allowed to air-dry, thus forming an adherent lubricating film on the surface. Several thin layers may be applied in this way to the same surface. The surface is preferably roughened prior to coating, e.g. by grit blasting, and where the surface is metallic a chemical conversion coating may be applied, e.g. a metallic phosphate, oxalate, sulphide, oxide or chromate.
