Abstract

In the production of a plastic-coated maple bowling pin, the maple pin body is pretreated by impregnation and coating with a synthetic polymerizable material which may be a saturated or unsaturated alkyd resin, a polyvinylidene chloride, a phenol-aldehyde resin, an acrylic resin, an epoxy resin, monomeric styrene or a polyurethane forming mixture. Polyamides or polysulphide rubbers may also be included and sealing protective gel and dirt repellent top coat lacquers are applied successively to the impregnated and coated body. The impregnating and first coating composition may be only partially polymerized before application of the sealing lacquer, which may also contain synthetic poylmerizable material. The sealing lacquer may comprise nitrocellulose, optionally together with epoxy resin, and may be up to 15 mils thick. The protective gel lacquer, which may be applied in a plurality of layers, may contain ethyl cellulose, or cellulose acetate butyrate and may be 25-250 mils thick. The top coat lacquer may be a conventional one, for example containing nitrocellulose, and may be up to 10 mils thick. The coatings may be applied by dipping (optionally, with controlled withdrawal), spraying or flow-coating.ALSO:A plastic-coated maple bowling pin is impregnated with a synthetic polymerizable material (see Division D1) and sealing, protective gel, and dirt repellent top coat lacquers are applied successively to the impregnated body (see Division B2).
