[Also in Division D1] Synthetic resin impregnated wood is prepared by impregnating wood with an organic liquid which can be polymerized or hardened and optionally contains dissolved polymers, plasticizers, accelerators, initiators and hardeners, under a reduced pressure followed by hardening wherein the dried wood is dipped into a bath containing the impregnating solution, a reduced pressure is created at least once, and the wood is removed from the bath after restoration of normal pressure, and the impregnated liquid is hardened. The reduced pressure may be generated by working in an evacuable vessel, or by heating the wood prior to immersion in the bath, to a temperature higher than the bath temperature and then dipping the wood into the bath. In the examples various woods are impregnated with the following solutions: (1) methyl methacrylate lauroyl and diacetyl peroxide, optionally mixed with a prepolymer of methyl methacrylate; in another solution the lauroyl peroxide is dissolved in dioctyl adipate, and the diacetyl peroxide is dissolved in dimethyl phthalate, (2) a polyester based resin (65% of an unsaturated solid resin and 35% of styrene) methyl methacrylate, lauroyl and diacetyl peroxide, (3) styrene, a prepolymer of styrene, lauroyl and diacetyl peroxide, (4) an epoxide resin and a hardener, (5) a prepolymer of methyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, benzoyl peroxide in dibutyl phthalate, and (6) styrene, a prepolymer of styrene, lauroyl and acetyl peroxide. Compressive tests were carried out on the above impregnated woods.
