Synthetic resin impregnated wood is produced by impregnating, under reduced pressure, wood with a liquid consisting of a liquid polymerizable vinyl compound and/or a substitution product thereof, containing dissolved polymers and plasticizers and/or accelerators and/or initiators, followed by hardening, wherein the impregnating liquid has a viscosity of at least 20 cp. at the impregnating temperature. The impregnating liquid may comprise a prepolymer prepared by partial polymerization. In the examples, pieces of wood are introduced into an evacuable vessel containing an impregnating liquid comprising (1) monomeric methyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate prepolymer, lauroyl and diacetyl peroxide or (2) monomeric styrene, styrene prepolymer, lauroyl and diacetyl peroxide. Impregnation is carried out in a vacuum, and this is followed by hardening.
