Abstract

In the production of polymeric material by partial polymerization of monomers or monomer mixtures which contain at least one heat-sensitive monomer such as acrylonitrile, with subsequent removal of the unpolymerized monomer or monomers by devolatilization, the devolatilization is carried out in two steps, the first step at a relatively low temperature such as 120 DEG -190 DEG C. in a devolatilizer, the temperature of whose surfaces is kept below the decomposition temperature of the monomer vapours, and the second step at a substantially higher temperature, such as 210 DEG -260 DEG C. under a pressure which is substantially lower than atmospheric pressure, such as a pressure below 150 mm. Hg. The process is particularly applicable to the copolymerization of styrene or alphamethyl styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of an aromatic solvent such as diethylbenzene, the polymerization being stopped at 40%-70% conversion.
