Abstract

Graft copolymers are made by homogenizing a mixture of polyethylene, styrene and a peroxide, in the absence of a liquid medium, at a temperature at least as high as the Vicat softening point of the polyethylene-styrene mixture. A suitable peroxide is tert. butyl perbenzoate. The product of the reaction consists of a mixture of polyethylene-styrene graft copolymer, homopolymeric ethylene and styrene and styrene monomer. The styrene monomer is removed from the mixture by solvent extraction, as may be the styrene homopolymer. The products may be used to make films which have greater transparency than those made from polyethylene. Specification 497,643 is referred to.
