Abstract

Polymers are produced by subjecting a cross-linked rubber to shearing forces in the presence of a polymerizable olefinic compound. Further monomer can be added to the product for a second operation to yield a product containing a smaller proportion of rubber. Temperatures range from 250 DEG C. to -40 DEG C. The cross linked rubbers can be formed from natural or synthetic rubbers, e.g. polybutadienes-1, 3, copolymers of butadiene-1,3 with acrylonitrile, styrene, isobutylene, methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate; polychloroprene; polyisobutylene; and those based on isocyanate modified polyesters and polyesteramides. Monomers specified are acrylic acid and its esters with saturated and allyl alcohols; substituted acrylic acids and their esters with saturated alcohols, allyl alcohol and glycol; nitriles and amides of acrylic and substituted acrylic acids; vinyl acetate; vinyl and vinylidene chloride; methyl isopropenyl ketone; and vinyl compounds e.g. styrene, methyl vinyl ketone, N-vinyl pyrollidone, 2 vinyl pyridine and vinyl carbazole; butadiene; isoprene; chloroprene; and divinyl benzene. Maleic anhydride may be added as a copolymer. Two or more rubbers at least one of which is cross-linked, and or two or more polymerizable olefinic compounds can be employed. Fillers and other compounding agents can also be present. The addition of tertiary dodecyl mercaptan reduces the molecular weight of the product and increases the proportion of polymerized monomer not combined with the rubber.
