Abstract

Silica fibres coated with a metal such as aluminium by a vapour deposition process are packed together with their longitudinal axis parallel and heated to fuse the metal coating and bond the fibres together. A further layer of coated fibres may be packed on the first layer with the axis of the fibres of the second layer at right angles to the axis of the first layer. The fibres may also be coated with layers of different metals.ALSO:Silica fibres coated with a metal such as aluminium by a vapour deposition process are packed together with their longitudinal axis parallel and heated to fuse the metal coating and bond the fibres together.
