Abstract

A pressure-sensitive adhesive consists essentially of cellulose nitrate, a plasticiser, and a soft tack-imparting synthetic resin which is either a castor oil-modified alkyd resin, a glyceryl ester of rosin, or a soluble phenolformaldehyde resin, or a mixture of two or more of these, the amount by weight of the plasticiser being at least twice as great and that of the resin being greater than the amount of cellulose nitrate. Volatile solvents such as benzene, alcohol, acetone, xylene, or mixtures of these may be used in preparing the adhesive in a form suitable for application to surfaces which are to be rendered adhesive. The plasticiser may be dibutyl phthalate, blown castor oil, white oil, liquid paraffin, or tri-cresyl phosphate. In examples, the adhesive comprises cellulose nitrate, castor oil-modified alkyd resin, ester gum, dibutyl phthalate, colouring matter, and a solvent mixture comprising acetone, benzene and methylated spirit. An adhesive tape is made by coating the adhesive composition on to a regenerated cellulose or cellulose acetate film, or a paper strip. The solvents are removed by passing the coated strip through an oven. The backing may be first treated with a primer, e.g. for paper a solution of glue and glycerine may be employed, or in the case of a regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivative film, there may be used an emulsion of vinyl acetate or methyl methacrylate, or a mixture of casein and methyl methacrylate.
